Hello!

My name is Katie and I am a senior painting major at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Growing up in Upstate, New York and then going to college in Richmond, Virginia and Savannah, Georgia, I have been able to see firsthand the changes in culture- both socially and politically- as I traveled down the East Coast. Lacking a definitive place that feels like “home” in my adult life, I have often struggled with feeling accepted or understood by the people around me. As a result, my art captures the memories that I fear could get lost in the chaos, while simultaneously aiming to make my viewers feel seen, represented and less alone as they navigate their own lives.

Artist Statement

My work revolves around my desire to preserve memory and connect with others through universal experience. As someone who struggles with memory and has grown up not necessarily feeling understood by the people around me, my work functions as a habitual practice that responds to my life experiences.

I reference my own photographs, taken in passing, and vague enough to form a nostalgic memory that could be recognized by my audience as one of their own. I paint on thrifted fabrics as an aesthetic choice and a desire to preserve and immortalize the past. Through this process, I react to my surroundings and experiences. I cement significant memories or otherwise, and create a tangible timeline of my life with the main goal of making others feel acknowledged and accepted. No matter your age, it is all of our first time experiencing life, and no one should have to navigate it alone.
